how do I make copies of a video or movie DVD? (not copy protected)

How can I make copies of video or movie DVDs (not copy protected) in Mavericks? I tried using Disk Utility to make a .cdr and then converted it to a .dmg, but that format will not open in DVD Player.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Thanks for the quick reply. However, I followed the procedure you reference but my new DVD disk does not play in DVD Player.

Here's what I did and what did not work.

Running latest version of Mavericks on 27" iMac with external Superdrive and 4.7 DVDs.

1. Put the non-copy protected DVD, with folder named VIDEO_TS, in the Superdrive. Stopped it from auto-playing.

2. There is plenty of space on my HD.

3. Went to Disk Utility > open

4. On left sidebar, selected the filename of the DVD

5. Chose New Image+ at top, chose destination Desktop, set Image Format to DVD?CD Master, set encryption to none, named new file, selected save to create. This created a .cdr.

6. Ejected disk from SD.

7. to burn new DVD, converted .cdr to .dmg format in Disk Utility: selected file from left sidebar, selected Convert, Image Format compression, Encryption none. This saved a new .dmg file to my Desktop.

8. On Desktop, selected the .dmg file, right-clicked, selected BURN file, which created a new DVD.

9. I ejected the new DVD and reinserted. IT WILL NOT PLAY in DVD Player, even if I launch the Player first and OPEN the file on the new DVD.

Please, what did I do wrong?

Thanks, Oglethorpe, I will try Handbrake if I can't solve my problem using Disk Utility. I downloaded Handbrake about 4 months ago and was not successful in making a copy at that time (of a different video).

Niel, thank you! It worked! Your help made the difference. I had read that the .cdr files were too large to copy directly and had to be converted to .dmgs. Nope! Burning directly from Disk Utility after making a DVD/CD Master is the way to do it. My sincere thanks.
