the Mac book air turns on and chimes but the screen remains black, second press of the on off switch turns no the screen. why has this happened and how do i fix it?

Select Macintosh HD as the Startup Disk.

i Have reset PRAM and SMC, unfortunately, this has not solved the problem. the mac will chime, but the keyboard does not light up and the screen remains black.
if i press the on/off button several times then eventually it will turn on. ...... Eventually!
