changing Apple ID for FaceTime

I tried to change the Apple ID for FaceTime using the instructions elsewhere on this site. However, when I tap the old Apple ID, in Settings: FaceTime: nothing happens. There should be 4 options one of which is Sign Out.

Demo. Correct regarding your first question. The Apple ID shown in my earlier post is the old one. I am trying to change it in FaceTime for the one in the photo below. As you can see I have it (the correct Apple ID) already in the iTunes and App Store. Should I sign out of it below and restart the iPad and sign into FaceTime prior to signing into settings as you suggest?

I'm sorry to hear this. I cannot for the life of me understand why the text fields in which her Apple ID appear will not respond to her touch unless the shaking of her hands has some nearing on this. But what wouldn't make sense about that is that she was able to tap the ID and sign out.

I Don't want to make the situation any worse, but I suppose that she is sort of at a dead point now anyway, if she cannot sign in. Have you had her try to reset all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. She will not lose any data. The iPad will reboot on its own and she will have to enter some of the device settings again. IIRC, she will have to enter her WiFi network password again so if that's a problem, forget about resetting all settings.

I Just noticed that you aid this happens to you on occasion as well on the Mac. It must have some connection to the .me suffix. Something else just struck me and that is I was under the impression that you could not change an Apple ID with a .me suffix since those are already Apple ID's. I never had a .me email address.

DId you read the first part of this in article? I assume that you have read it, but since the .me is already an Apple ID, could that be why it wants to keep reverting to that in the settings?

It could be an iCloud problem. It is so hard to diagnose things like this when you aren't sitting right there next to her watching her every move. Not that she is giving you bad information, but she might be leaving out some subtle little thing that might be very important to resolve the problem.

At this point, I think that you should probably try contacting Apple ID support.

The issue here is going to be that the support is country based. You may need to have her navigate to this website and then help her through the options. At the very least, take a look at the site and see what you think.

In your first post, you said that you tried to change the "old" Apple ID for FaceTime. Does that mean that you changed your Apple ID email address and now you are trying to sign into FaceTime and Messages with no success? Have you tried signing out of your ID in Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID? Tap the ID and sign out. Can you sign out there? If you can, restart your iPad and then sign in again, but try signing into FaceTime before you sign into the settings.

Demo. I will read it! I am actually asking on behalf of my mother. She is in New Zealand and I am in New York. The "old" email is one she set up and because her hands shake, is the wrong name (she never noticed). But, what's worse, whatever she used as the password and birthdate is also not what she intended presumably because her shaking hands hitting wrong letters and digits. So there is no way to use the Apple ID. I, myself have not changed my Apple ID since I first started back in 2006. And if I ever do, I will read your suggestion. It's early morning in NZ so I will relay your advice now. Thanks!

Demo, it didn't work.

As soon as she signed out of the 'correct' Apple ID in iTunes and App Store it too reverted to the old and wrong ID. It appeared after she tapped Sign Out. Now both places have the old ID and in Settings, FaceTime when you tap on the ID, nothing happens. The old Apple ID is a Apple suffix and in the past it has always appeared out of nowhere and asked to be signed into. The same happens to me for a couple of days if I inadvertenly use my .me username on my iMac.

And it turns out I have read the article!

Demo. Correct, she was able to sign out (she just needs to concentrate!) so its not the shaking.

Re the me.com restrictions. I thought that you couldn't change an email associated with them (as the ID and the email are one and the same). However, you could add another email in case you no longer used the original me.com email.

What my mother is trying to do is change the Apple ID on the iPad associated with Facetime to an Apple ID that has worked for her the past couple of years. For some reason the FaceTime app on the iPad reverted to the problem ID (which she has never used because of the password/birthdate problem). When I went into Manage Apple ID and asked for reset info by email, it said "an email had been sent" but neither her nor I received an email in any of our email accounts (checked spam etc). So, not only has the problem Apple ID not have a known password or birthdate, it has a phantom email address (or an email address that we don' t know of - probably the me.com address!!) I can access her other, good Apple ID and manage that. But she cannot find a way to attach it to her iPad apps.

Could it be a iCloud problem? She seems to remember that the pop-ups she got with the problem ID were mentioning iCloud. She has never used iCloud. I am wondering if iCloud is associated with the problem ID and somehow she's inadvertently kicked the good ID out of FaceTime and the problem one has defaulted to it

Nice timing! I also decided that Apple Support might be the way to go and just contacted them. They were able to initiate a solution. We just have to wait 24 hours for the reset email to be sent to her. It may not solve everything but she will be able to reset her 'wrong' Apple ID with new password. And from there, she hopefully will have the ability to use it for Facetime or change it to the one she was using

Thanks for all you time and help
