Safari hijacked by pop-up warning of malware. Called 1-800-986-6395 as advised. Man answered "Apple care" but I'm skeptical. How do I clear my Safari screen?

Safari hijacked by popup warning of malware. Couldn't clear page. Called 1-800-986-6395 as advised. Man answered "Apple care" and started asking ID questions. I hung up. How can I get this crap off my screen? Quit Safari and am using Firefox now. Thanks.

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, close Safari, and then launch it with the Shift key held down. If that doesn't work, temporarily disconnect the computer from the Internet.

If that message continues to appear, click here and run Adware Medic.

Force quit Safari, then restart Safari while holding the shift key.

Never, ever call the number or interact with the popup message. It is a scam.
