How much data is used with Google Maps?

So far, I've figured out that location services itself doesn't use any data but viewing google maps uses data because the map must load. I was wondering if you didn't move the map so that no new parts of the map had to be loaded but still used location services to see where you are would use data. I'm going to be visiting some cities and would like to use google maps to walk around. Thanks in advance for any help!

I download a map with Google Maps. You can look at the map. Size & move around.

If you do turn by turn directions,

-- I do not think that Google Maps refers to the downloaded map data. I loaded all the road data in my county.

-- still saw cellular data usage. 0.4 to 0.8 meg per mile. Depends on the amount of turning.

-- Google states you must have cellular signal to have turn by turn mapping.

This is my experience with iphone 4 ios 7.1.2 and Google Maps.

Good point.

My iPhone was getting hot when off of a power connection, so I kind of forgot I stopped on this project.

When I drill down, I see both of the maps I have downloaded have expiration dates. Would become a hassle to maintain the maps. I'll have to see if I can still use them after a warning message.

I got bad directions returning to my home. Put me in a neighbouring street.
