white screen!

When i turn on my macbook with OS 10.5.8. I get a white screen. Ive tried pressing down option while turning it on to try and turn it on from a different drive but I only get one option of a drive and that is macintosh HD. ive also tried option, command, P and R and it did what it was supposed to which was for it to restart and again nothing other than me hearing the chime twice happened. Things such as holding down shift while it turns on or holding down command and R or command and R and P do not work. Can anyone please help me? I dont want to take it to the store because the only thing they will say is oh its to old get a new one or try to charge me the price a new one would cost.
