Q: photos freezes but says is importing new photos from my iphone6

I am trying to import new photos into the Photos app on my MacBookPro Retina 15 from my iphone6.  Photos identifies the number of new photos and I selected to import them.  Screen says importing, but nothing happening.  No photos loaded, no images, no last import...  Waited and waited.  Said to quit photos and it said woulld lose import, so kept it open.  But still, nothing happening!  So quit Photos, but Photos won's quit... says "closing library".  Seems frozen!  I have finally force quit photos.  Any one else have this happen.  Ideas?

Note.  After force quiting Photos... reopened Photos and then imported the photos from the iPhone without the slowness or freezing.  Not sure what happened before, maybe Photos just decided to freeze; but at least the photos are now in Photos.

    Yes, as FSchaeffer indicated above, close all applications, open Disk Utility, select the drive where your photo library is and select "Repair Disk Permissions".

    Correcting a 1TB HD with 200MB free space and it took about 5 minutes to run, fixing several permission errors - you can view the errors being found and fixed while running the process.

    Finally, reboot the computer.  I haven't had a hang up since!

    Those of us with external drives cannot always repair disk permissions. I've found my external drive to be a problem for several Photos based apps. Never had this problem with iPhotos.

    Extended (journaled) through USB2.0 no hub. Repairing permissions is only available on a bootable volume.

    I have tried this but the Repair Disk Permissions is grayed out.  I assume this is because it is an external hard drive as mentioned above.  It is a 4 tb Lacie model ST 4000DX002 - 1H2178 connected through thunderbolt connection.

    I found a partial solution.

    Repairing permission indeed does seem to help, but if you are running El Capitan you will notice that there is no more verify or repair file permissions in the Disk Utility. A search through Apple support reveals this bit of information "Beginning with OS X El Capitan, system file permissions are automatically protected. It's no longer necessary to verify or repair permissions with Disk Utility."

    This seemed at least partially bogus to me. (using chown(1) and chmod(1) will no longer work? I find that hard to believe.) So a little more searching found that the command line repair_packages utility still has a permission verify and repair mode. So I verified my permissions first:

    $ sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages --verify --standard-pkgs /

    Indeed it seems that there were many files with the 'wrong' permissions. My hypothesis is that although El Capitan may 'protect' the file permissions (whatever that means) it didn't repair any bad ones be for the 'lock down.' So I decided to repair them and see what happens:

    $ sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages --repair --standard-pkgs /

    (BTW, this worked but I believe it would have been better to run as sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages --repair --standard-pkgs --volume / )

    I then restarted my machine for good measure and then reran the import. SUCCESS (sort of). Photos imported.

    I then ran into a problem with PTPCamera quitting. I am not sure what that is. But I am able to import about 20 pictures at a time successfully (which is better than none.) I believe that there are some other threads in the forum discussing PTPCamera.

    I hope this helps.

    I recommend not letting Photos open automatically when you plug your phone in (http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/06/17/how-to-stop-photos-from-opening-when-plu gging-an-iphone-in/), and then opening it manually from the Applications folder. Automatic opening of anything on Mac is always ridden with problems for me.

    I ran into this problem yesterday. I tried rebooting and repairing the photo library and fixing permissions. I have over 1000 images to import into Photos. My iCloud is on for both Mac and iPhone, but turned off for most features of photos. When I clicked Import in Photos, I noticed that images/videos sometimes did not load from the iPhone. After all those other things did not work, I turned off my virus protection, since it has real-time protection. It appears to be importing just fine now. I'll turn it back on after it's done importing. It's about halfway done right now.

    MacBook Pro 17 (2009), Mac OS X 10.11.6, iPhone 6S Plus

    Good luck!

    ===== Update

    To be a little more clear, when I clicked on Import, that's the tab. The thumbnails of the images/videos that did not display was the screen where you choose which items to import. This was before actually trying to import.

    As I write this, my import of 1000+ images/videos has finished.

    In El Capitan, in Disk Utility use the First Aid button. that seemed to have sorted it.

    I had the exact same issue. What I did was restart both my iphone and mac, then import works fine.
