Updating one machine on OS X 10.3 from another on 10.4.11?

Hi Friends,

I am working on 30+ years of Macs bring older ones back into use and giving them new roles.

Most were put into storage becasue they stopped or were replaced at a time when parts were hard to find (pre www..Amazon...eBay and recyclers!) and quotes from Apple Suppliers were often loaded to encourage a new purchases rather than make good what you had.

I already have an old LC working again and a PB 1400 going faster and being a useful scsi transfer option. :-)

I have now moved on to my old iMac G3 Indigo, which only works in so far as the switch light goes on and turns off but nothing else happens. Having tried every simple option PRAM battery etc. to no avail - Aa good friend suggested buying a new working model would be better than surgery, Cheaper too.

Luckily I found a working iMac G3 600 (currently on OS X 10.3.9) at a reasonable price and I have done some basic cleaning and OS updating. The iMac also runs the Flash memory card in a USB card reader. I also have a FW to FW DVD Drive which runs fine with the iMac.

I have a Pismo running 10.4.11 but its FW is not working :-(

Q. Is there some way I can update the iMac 600 to 10.4 from the Pismo?

- USB on the Pismo is fine and the CD/DVD drive runs fine too. The Pismo also runs a PCMCIA Card carrier with a Flash Memory card in the slot fine. It also runs a PCMCI WiFI Card fine!

Q. Should a PCMCIA FW card in the Pismo work?

My current MBP has been great for fast downloading old data and progs via USB 3 Memory stick and flash memory card!

Advice most welcome?

Colin

I have not succeeded in boot my iMac g3 600 from a usb connected hd drive.

You may have problems if you copy Tiger over from the prismo: missing drives and copyright issues.

"You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it (Leopard), if they still have it... helps if you tell them you have a new iPhone (iPad) that needs it!"

Restore Tiger 10.4 & Leopard 10.5 DVDs are available from Apple by calling 1(800) 275-2273. Have your serial number ready. Have your credit card ready too. There may be a small fee.

Another number to try is 800-767-2775.

Sorry but I think it must be a bit late in the day for someone ;-)

- 'helps if you tell them you have a new iPhone (iPad) that needs it!' - Those machines dont use any version of OS X - they use iOS so you'd look an idiot if you suggested that to Support!

I dont need 10.5! I have that already and G3s wont run it anyway and that would be an intyernatiomnal call but could be worth it if the costs were as stated;-).

Thanks for the two links - sounds like you need to be in the US to get a deal like that 'SC to MN'. EBay dont have any Tiger Discs and I know the norm is/was a DVD or you could get Apple to swap it for a CD set.

The Drive of the Pismo running 10.4.11 is totally legit and HDD. I am hoping to find instructions on malling a dmg file that I can transport either by FW to the iMac or by FW to a new CD on the Ext FW Drive or onto the Flash Memory card on the Card reader or PMCIA carrier. Ill keep hoping some one can tell me what to do... via Disk Utility I think ;-)

Thanks for trying.

That's what happens when I copy and paste the answer without reading what was copied. Fair is fair. Apple reps have a standard policy of denying all problems at least it seems this way. There is no problem with the new discoveryd internet software on 10.10 and 8.x. The main ios 8.x thread has gotten over 900,000 views.

Look into voice over internet, viop. Doubt Apple would ship internationally anyway. Sure do not from the Apple store.

Will boot from external FW drive or external FW dvd drive. It must boot from dvd drive to install. Get an external FW drive or USB drive ( to clone, you do not need to boot). Use carbon copy cloner to clone working 10.4 system. Insert updated harddrive in machine. I believe this works with a black disc system. Iffy for a grey disc system.

YMMV

Robert!

Just so you can see what Bombich Software (authors of CCC) themselves told me an hour or so ago: Forgive me if I rely upon them?

Hi Colin,

I'm sorry, we're no longer distributing or supporting a version of CCC that will work on Mac OS 10.5 or older. In a pinch, you can use Disk Utility to copy your OS and data to another disk.

CCC 4 is required for Mac OS X 10.10 and newer and is recommended for Mac OS X 10.8 - 10.9.

CCC 3.5.7 will work on Mac OS 10.6 - 10.9
