i rented a movie on my iPad to watch on the plane and now I can't find its location on my iPad . Do I have to download it and can I watch it offline

It should be in the rentals tab of the Video app.

If you rented it on your iPad then it should have downloaded into its Videos app - have you checked there ? If it doesn't show there then try searching for it via the spotlight search screen and see if that finds it and lets you play it (once you start playing a rental you have 24 hours if you are in the US, 48 hours elsewhere, before it expires)
