However, this will not recover you 97 gigs of space. While both apps claim that space, it's the same files they are referring to.

If both libraries are referring to the same files, how much space - if any - could I expect to free up by deleting the smaller of the two libraries?

Because you might prefer it and it's capabilities might be more to your needs.

Should it? It's a different application with different features, and some are superior to iPhoto, yes. But not all.

Yes, and to actually remove them from the HD you'd need to delete them from both Libraries.
