FTP connections using OSX Wifi Hotspot

Apparently the built in wifi hotspot (internet sharing) does not allow ftp connections to pass through. As a web developer this is rather annoying. Is the a way to enable FTP to pass if connected to the mac mini wifi hotspot?

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
