Q: IPAD FULL RESTORE

Would like to a factory re-set and restore from ITunes and I Cloud. This is an IPAD 2 and it's slowing down. So is my Wifes.

To get a full restore I read I somehow need both ITUNES and the Cloud. I particularly don't want to loose my "bookmarks" Since I have about 150.

Has anyone done this and does it completely restore the IPAD??

Thanks........Ken

Yes, this restores the iPad and reloads a fresh copy of iOS.

If you read the article that you cited you will see that it tells you to use iTunes on your computer to backup your iPad before doing the restore to factory. After the restore is done you will be back to setup state onyour iPad. When you go through the setup you can restore to the backup you took earlier and the content of the iPad, including bookmarks, will be restored.

    iCloud isn't necessary for this.

I Have restored a couple of iPads, an iPod Touch 5th generation and my iPhone a couple of times for each device. I have never lost anything when I restored my devices. The key to this is knowing how to back up with iCloud or how to backup, transfer purchases and sync with iTunes. It depends on which way you choose to go and what you have been doing all along.

I Backup with iCloud and with iTunes. I do use iTunes as my primary backup and I have always synced with iTunes as well. I would never rely on the cloud as my only backup. When you use iCloud only, you cannot restore to factory settings. You can only erase all content and settings. That does not reinstall the iOS software. When you restore to factory settings with iTunes, you not only erase the device, but you will reinstall the iOS software again.

There is no need for me to restore from iCloud since my complete backup is in iTunes on my Mac and there are photos that I want to transfer to the iPad that I sync from iPhoto on my Mac via iTunes.

Have you ever backed up at all yet? If you backup, which method do you use?

Thanks for the quick response Jim, however, after reading that lengthy Apple instruction on restore, it mentions that the bookmarks aren't maintained in ITunes, just the cloud. So I'm wondering how to do the cloud thing?  Ken

The article you cited is only 1 page long: Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

Bookmarks are only saved in iCloud if you are sharing Bookmarks in iCloud (i.e., Settings > iCloud > Safari is turned On). In that case the Bookmarks are not part of either an iCloud or iTunes backup but are picked up from iCloud after the restore.

Thanks for the additional info and yes, I've back up and sync regularly to ITunes. I also let it backup to the Cloud when it's charging. Our IPADs were two years old last July and still chugging along but slowing down now.

No matter how fast the wifi we happen to be using they're getting slower. We clear the cookies/history regularly.......Ken

You have to erase the device in Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and settings. Then you start all over again with the activation process. At some point in the setup, you will be given the option to set up as new, or restore from an iTunes or iCloud backup. You will choose the iCloud option.

    Take a look at this.
