I was able to solve this issue by opening System Preferences - Security & Privacy. I clicked the Privacy tab then clicked Accessibility. I added Google Drive to the list of apps that can control my computer. I restarted Google Drive and all is good. At least for now. Hope this helps everyone.

Same problem. Have used GD for 2 years with very rare incident. Past 2 months I'm getting the "unable to connect" and grey icon pretty regularly. It's annoying. Only fix for me is quit GD and relaunch which usually resolves the issue. I'm not sure if this is the result of an issue with GD, a recent OS X update or both. I haven't found much searching online and would also welcome feedback from anyone with knowledge of how to more permanently prevent this issue from recurring.

I am having the same issue, and seems to correspond to the Yosemite 10.10.5 OS X update, at least for me.

Sometimes turning wifi on and off, and quitting and restarting Google Drive has fixed the "unable to connect" error for me.

But as of the last few hours, neither are doing the trick. I went ahead and did a permissions repair and restarted, and then tried the wifi/quitting process again, but still I'm getting "unable to connect."

So far, I have found these links (below) that might be helpful. These pertain mostly to network settings. I know the 10.10.5 update was related to security updates, so perhaps those changes are conflicting with Google Drive syncing?

I haven't researched where and how I can update these settings to say if they fix it for me, but that's my next step.

Beyond that, I don't know what else to do...

I just started using Google Drive on 10.11.2 and I get this same problem every time the Macbook Air awakes from sleep. I'm using two-factor authentication at Google and so every time I have to quit and restart the app, and then sign in again with the password and two-factor code. This is really annoying. I have been using Dropbox for years with no problems and thought that Google Drive would be a mature product by now and was about to make the switch for the new year.

I've been having a similar problem recently as well. The drive icon on the menu bar is greyed out and when I open it I see "Unable to connect".

Some things to add to the thread:

  • I am using Maverick and have not upgrade to 10.10 or 10.11.
  • If I uninstall Google Drive then re-install it, it works at first but then I get "Unable to connect"
  • Firewall is off and no proxy settings
  • I can go to Google Drive on the web and access my account

Feels like a bug in the Google Drive application.

Hi Darrell,

Re: 'Unable to connect'

I'm having very similar issues here having used GD for over three years now, and this being the first time I've had these problems.

I have it synced over three machines (1 pc and 2x macs - iMac & Macbook Air). The problem is with my iMac, which like the Air, is running 10.11.3 El Capitan.

Re firewall I've selected 'allow incoming connections' for GD, and don't know how to do much more than that as suggested by some others here

Yes - I am also able to access GD on the web.

I've deleted the app and re-installed and was recently able to login again but it has again gone to grey telling me it's 'unable to connect'

Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

J

Update to my situation. I have my computer on a different network and the Google Drive is working fine. I have been using it for 3 days and it has no issues at all. The only thing which seems to have changed is the network I am connecting to. This leads me to believe there is something on the other network which is blocking the Google Drive app. When I go to the website it would be using 80 (HTTP) or 443 (SSL). These are standard ports. So maybe someone on the other network is allowing standard ports to work but if the Google Drive app uses another port, the administrator of the other network could be blocking the app.

So if you find your Google Drive is not working, try using it on something like Starbucks wifi. If it starts working then your original network is blocking you. You'd have to find out if someone is blocking ports. If they are, you'd have to find out from Google which port the Google Drive app uses and whether or not the network administrator is willing to unblock that port.
