Old iPhoto files were duplicated after switching on iCloud photos.

I started using the new Photos app and then switched on iCloud photos. This caused my old iPhoto files to be correctly uploaded with my new Photo files, but then also subsequently redownloaded into the Photos file too and this is taking up a lot of space. The download originals to this Macbook is switched on and I want the originals on here.

I can view contents of the libraries on the startup disk, and I can see all the Masters from the iPhoto library is contained in the Photos library too.

How can I fix this without losing my photos? Is it safe to delete the iPhoto files directly from the disk?

Thank you in advance

I do not follow your post

the one thing that is clear is that you do not understand how Photos and iphoto share the same original using hard links - see Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support - so having the iPhoto and Photos libraries is not doubling the space - in fact it is using very little more space

But the first part makes no sense - there is no connection between iCloud Photos and iPhoto (actually there is no iCloud Photos - there is an iCloud Photo Library and a Photos application)

And if you want the originals on your Mac then it seems to be doing what you want - the only additional originals downloaded will be any that are not already on the Mac

I just realized this question is invalid.

"When Finder reports the file size of your Photos library, it includes all your originals and previews. It may look like your remaining iPhoto or Aperture library is taking up twice the space on your hard drive, but it isn't—your images exist only in one location, even though you may have more than one photo library."
