But the decision to use AFP was made by your employer.
So, based on this article, I believe you can still communicate to AFP protocol, as the current Mac OS X Yosemite can use it:

I'll check with the administrator to see what alternatives might be available. Two of our servers use smb://. Might be possible to migrate the older afp servers to at least smb protocol. Still trying to acces the office from my iPad, though.
