Q: Overheating/Crash MBP GPU Retina 2013

Hi all,

This is a problem that has suddenly developed about two months ago without any catalyst. If the GPU heats up to 70C (I use istat menus) it will crash the machine. Obvious causes will heat it up that much, such as some video or davinci resolve or any GPU intensive program which I use occasionally.

I've unfortunately had to resort to using smcFanControl and running the fans at 7000RPM constantly (Yes, I know this will greatly reduce their longevity), which keeps the GPU temperature below 70C. This means playback on video files no longer crash the machine, however intensive programs (esp Resolve) will crash the machine.

The machine is unfortunately out of warranty.

I'm wondering if anyone with potentially a more engineer background might have some ideas on this, whether it might be due to a faulty sensor or whether the GPU is just plainly faulty and steps forward. I'm aware this is a common thing to say, however I'm not writing the following in a reactionary or emotional way: I have been a mac-head since the Apple IIc plus and have had numerous machines, including 4 laptops which have failed, and I feel this will be my last Mac; so buying a new one or costly motherboard replacement are not on the cards.

The specs:

15 inch, early 2013

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

2.7 GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I will happily post the crash log next if anyone feels they decode it. Each time it crashes the log is similar or the same, but the content is beyond my understanding.

A big, heartfelt thanks for any help the community can provide.

70°c should be well with tolerable operating temperatures.

    Post the kernel panic report:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

Also run an Apple hardware Test:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

    Ciao.

Thanks OGELTHORPE, already done the AHT a few times, each returning all clear.

Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  Your MBP is included in the group that has faulty GPU's and you should have it tested:

    Ciao.

    Ciao OGELTHORPE

Thanks again, I'll do as you say and try that out.

Offhand, might you know if I'll be charged for them to look at it, if they find it isn't included in this specific recall? The machine is out of warranty currently.

All evaluations at an Apple store genius bar are FREE.  That includes bringing it in for ANY reason and warranty status is not relevant.

A few weeks ago I had a second hand MBP tested that I had just purchased and there was NO CHARGE.

    Ciao, OGELTHORPE

After trying at two apple stores, only to be told the nearest appointment was 3 weeks away, I phoned Apple.

For some reason they refused flat out to let me mail in the computer (this is in contradiction to their terms in that link you so kindly pasted earlier), and instead told me to go to a secondary apple authorised repair service. Over the phone they were very cagey about whether or not I would have to pay for the machine to be evaluated.

The service evaluated the machine and it qualifies for this repair extension program. They then ordered a replacement part a few days ago.

I have just received a notice however that they are quoting me approx GBP650 (EUR 900, US 1000) now, because the motherboard has some sort of problem/defect that they claim voids the repair extension program.

If I don't want them to action the service and leave the machine as is, they claim I have to pay them GBP100 for the evaluation.

I'm sorry I know you do not represent Apple, but can you offer any advice for me in this case?

    Many thanks

I am disappointed to hear of your difficulties.  My observations are that when dealing with non-Apple stores, the rules are different and the AASP often will charge for an evaluation.  It may seem unfair when compared with an Apple store, but they do not have the same financial resources behind them that an Apple store does.

I would get a second option, this time from an Apple store, even if it takes 3 weeks to have it evaluated.  I think that your chances for a favorable resolution are much better there.

Just an update for anyone else who might be reading this and stuck in the same situation:

I went to the authorized repair shop, and they wanted to charge me. So i phoned up Apple, and while I was on the phone, to an apple employee, who was literally in the middle of telling me how I would have to pay for the machines evaluation, when someone from the shop came out and said they were mistaken and wouldn't charge me for the evaluation.

What has happened to this company...?
