Update server not available?

Update server not available?

If I try to check for a software update I get a message indicating that I Software Update cannot access the update server and imlies that I am not connected to the Internet. I am connected to the internet and as far as I know my system is uptodate. Does anyone else suffer from this. I am worried in case I cannot get updates when there are some available.

MACBOOK, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Open Terminal and type

softwareupdate -l

and press return
If your system is updated you should get

Software Update Tool
Copyright 2002-2005 Apple

No new software available.

If you get some other messages probably the update server is down.
