Can I install iPhoto onto the new MacBook, as it appears to come with Photos only? I need to sort my library by "Title" and I can't find a way to do that in Photos. I want to purchase a new MacBook, so my only solution seems to somehow get iPhoto downloaded onto the MacBook. If I can't download iPhoto onto a new Apple computer that means I can no longer purchase any new Apple computers, and that is a pretty devastating thought!

Why does Apple want to force us to use an inferior product ('photos'), or some third party software that doesn't seamlessly integrate with everything else (which is why we use Apple products in the first place). I'm being told by Apple that I have to share all my photos in the 'cloud' (which I don't want, and definitely don't want to have to pay for), and I can no longer use the events, faces or places functionality that I found really useful in iPhoto.
I understand that the professional community is also annoyed about losing Aperture too.
I have several thousand scanned photos that have to be organized by place and/or the date the photo was taken; i.e. 1895, 1923, etc. I have over 10,000 photos in my library and all are organized by the date/place the photo was taken. My photos are then organized in Event date groupings, for example. 1895-1950, 1951-1980, 1981-2015. The event may be labeled "family" or "fall scenery", etc. I use the "Title" field of the individual photo to designate date and place. I can think of no other way to organize my photos that mimics this criteria. What app do you suggest that can replace iPhoto? I use Aperture for my more professional needs, but Aperture has also been phased out by Apple. I do not organize photos by moments or faces or date downloaded as does Photos. And I will not pay to let Apple store all my photos in the Cloud!

Let's stop right there, Apple aren't forcing you to anything at all. Apple offers products and services for sale. You can purchase or not. Your choice. Or use another product or service. Or not. Or keep using iPhoto. You are forced to do nothing.

I migrated to Adobe's Lightroom. Everything you want to do is available in that app.
You have hit on my frustration with this change by Apple. They have taken away two very useful photo applications and replaced them with one that does not take into account the loss of functions for those of us who use iPhoto and Aperture. I'm very serious when I say I can no longer purchase an Apple computer if it does not have the means to handle my photo library. Ease of use and compatibility through all Apple devices was my first reason for converting to Mac's, but maintaining my photo library was certainly my second reason. Now that very important reason has been taken away and it's pointless to purchase a computer that cannot handle my simple photography needs. My photo shoots sometimes consist of up to 500-600 photos and I need a machine that has the ability to organize and handle that well. When I was in Africa, my shots ran into the thousands and spanned several days and many locations. I must be able to organize better than what it appears Photos can do. I do hope there is resolution to this, I don't want my hardware to get so out of date that it too is no longer viable.
Thanks for this positive reply. I looked at Lightroom some time ago and what I saw then did appear to be similar to iPhoto.
So, you are indicating that you do not currently have iPhoto as a purchased item in your App Store? Otherwise, I'm not understanding the problem. As Terence indicated, if you have already purchased it in the past, and you were running an iPhoto 9.x version, then you can download the upgraded version (9.6) on to your Mac running Yosemite.

Lightroom is more an Aperture level application, and there is a learning curve, but you'll be able to mimic your organisation there.

But the real point is that there are plenty of photo apps out there, and there is one that will meet your needs

Part of my concern is, does the new MacBook support iPhoto...can it be downloaded to the MacBook without any loss of integrity? When software is phased out, at some point new setups will no longer support that software. I am currently running the latest operating system on my iMac and using iPhoto. I was hoping someone in the community might have already tried to download iPhoto to a MacBook and could let me know if it successfully loaded. My intention is to download my photos to the MacBook while in the field, to be viewed and then later transferred to my iMac.
Many people running Yosemite are also running version 9.6 of iPhoto. Not everyone like Photos, so many continue to use iPhoto for that reason. Another one of our resident Photo experts (aside from Terence đ) is LĂ©onie, and she has indicated that she is using both without issue, I believe. I will see if I can get her to take a look at this thread to provide you with some advice.

Both applications - iPhoto '11, version 9.6.1 and Aperture 3.6 are working very well with MacOS X 10.10.3.
I am using them on two MacBook Pros and an iMac.
If iPhoto or Aperture are showing at the App Store in the Purchases tab, when you sign in with your AppleID, you will be able to install them from your Purchases tab, as Terence Devlin said in the first post.
You may need to unhide the purchases however: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202320
There are no guarantees how well Aperture and iPhoto will work, once you upgrade beyond Yosemite, when the next MacOS X will be released.
When you look for other apps to replace Aperture, check out Capture One Pro and compare it to Lightroom. For me, Capture One seems to be closer to Aperture than Lightroom.
Thank you for this info. My hope will continue to be that Apple comes up with new software to replace iPhoto and Aperture. I also know that as soon as a new OS X comes out and I download it there is the possibility that iPhoto and Aperture will no longer work. So, I will be checking out 3rd party software for replacements. I will look into Lightroom and Capture One Pro for sure. Thanks again for the great suggestions.
