MacBook Pro suddenly running slow

Hi.

I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) with 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 4GB for memory.

I only use it for Microsoft Word, emails, Netflix... typical college stuff.

But my laptop started running extremely slow over night sometime last week.

Since then, I have tried various recommendations that I found on the discussion board here, including:

  • Reset SMC
  • Re-install Yosemite OS X
  • Disk Utility first aid repair (permissions repair) - no error
  • Downloaded Etrecheck (reported no error)
  • Checked battery - have 400+ charges remaining
  • Checked storage - 400GB free of 500GB
  • Downloaded ClamXav - no malware

None of these helped/worked and my laptop continues to take minutes to type up a sentence on MS Word because it keeps freezing (with the little rainbow wheel).

It also repeatedly freezes for 10-20 seconds when trying to play music on iTunes or Spotify, and it is impossible to play any videos without the pauses and pixelated screens.

Also, if this is relevant, ever since these problems arose, my laptop doesn't automatically "sleep" when I close the screen, but stays on upon closing the screen and uses up battery and heats up my laptop.

All of this literally happened over night; my computer was running at optimal speed and I made absolutely no software changes/downloads for this to happen.

All of my software are up to date and I have three more weeks of exam period so this is very frustrating.

Can somebody please help?

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Hi,

thanks for the reply, I apologize for the delay in my reply; I have been busy with school work.

I did mark the exact hour, minute, second to the beachball cursor this morning, and when I opened the console activity log, weirdly the log omits many of the times that I have marked.

For example, I have written down a pause from 9:46:00 to 9:46:24, but the log shows:

  • 21/05/2015 09:45:14.000 kernel[0]: pci pause: SDXC
  • 21/05/2015 09:47:04.413 hidd[92]: IOHIDEventQueue unable to get policy for event of type 11. (e00002e8)

Or I had down 15:33:20 to 15:33:43 and 15:33:54 to 15:34:23 marked down, but the log shows:

  • 19/05/2015 15:32:18.972 CoreServicesUIAgent[269]: Error -60005 creating authorization
  • 19/05/2015 15:37:47.327 hidd[93]: IOHIDEventQueue unable to get policy for event of type 11. (e00002e8)

Like these, a lot of the times that I marked does not show on the log for some reason.

However, here are some of the logs that does show:

  • 19/05/2015 10:50:13.528 WindowServer[140]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Microsoft Word" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
  • 19/05/2015 10:50:16.539 WindowServer[140]: common_reenable_update: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "Microsoft Word" after 4.01 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)
  • 19/05/2015 11:53:28.371 AppleSpell[580]: *** -[NSMachPort handlePortMessage:]: dropping incoming DO message because the connection is invalid
  • 19/05/2015 11:53:28.944 hidd[93]: IOHIDEventQueue unable to get policy for event of type 11. (e00002e8)

Hopefully you can make sense of what's going on.

I am seeing a lot of the "unable to get policy for event of type 11," if that means anything.

I really appreciate your help, thank you!

It's likely that the startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Linc Davis rarely answers questions posed by others that the original poster. He also does not like Etrecheck reports.

Yosemite will run more efficiently if you install additional RAM. 8 GB RAM should be sufficient and the best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

Rid you MBP of Avast. It is not necessary and is having an adverse affect on performance. Go to the developers web site for uninstallation instructions.

Rid the MBP of Google Chrome and its various parts. It is the glutton of browsers. Use Firefox, Safari or Opera instead.

Ciao.

Hi Linc,

I too have been having difficulty with my macbook pro (2012) suddenly running slow. I did what you told another user to do (copy and paste "syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef" into the Terminal. I received an output in the TextEdit that reads: " Jan 11 20:12:35 Kevins-MacBook-Pro kernel[0] <Debug>: Previous Shutdown Cause: -60 " . You said that there shouldn't be any text, so I am just wondering what this output means. Any help would be great!

Thanks,
