Q: Can hook up monitor to Mac Mini?

I had an older Mac OSX 10.7.5 , Memory 4GB 1067 MHz RAM. The hard drive failed recently, and thanks to this community I was able to anticipate that and back up all my files on a FireWire 800 from LaCie. Now my beautiful Mac is sitting empty and lifeless on my desk. Is there any way to hook up an external hard drive or Mac Mini so I can at least use the monitor part of the iMac? I don't have enough money to replace it completely.

I think my computer specs will l support TDM -- only problem is the FAQ says it must be turned on and awake. I can turn it on but it won't boot, just gray screen and turning whirlpool.... do you think I will still be able to get the iMac to support the Firewire connection?
