Q: applications start up upon log in I want to stop from doing so.

I'm running 10.10.3 on a Mac Pro with 3.2 GHz Quad Core processor, 20 GB memory, 66 GB storage available on boot drive.

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

    Check the list of login items in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, and if you get a prompt at shutdown asking if you'd like to reopen the windows when logging back in, turn that option off.
