Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
All my Preferences/settings have defaulted to factory settings e.g. Safari bookmarks, history, mail has no accounts, tray apps are all the defaults etc etc This happened after updating OS X today.
I have a time machine and an external backup, but don't know which files to restore.
iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)
Are other files present, such as the contents of the Documents folder?
JJust checked...all my documents, photographs etc are missing.
ALso all my apps are acting as if I've just downloaded ie requesting licence numbers, authentication, etc

You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.
Afraid not, already checked that possibility. Signed out then signed back in again with my usual (admin) user. No change.
I suggest you restore the whole system from the last snapshot taken before whatever is was that went wrong.
Hoped you weren't going to suggest that
However, a complete restore is on the go....just 6 hrs to wait.
