Can you create an apple id without using CC info?

I recently lent a friend of mine one of my old phones that I reset to factory settings. I'd like to download a couple of free apps for communication purposes but don't want to leave my information on the phone. Can he create his own ID without attaching a credit so he has freedom to download free apps? If not, can I log in with my ID, download the apps, and the logout and he can still use the phone?
