Same with my son's MBook Air and my daughters MBook Pro, but works OK with my iMac. All are on OS 10.10.3. I noted that the iMac has iPhoto 9.6.1 while the others are 9.6. Unfortunately we cannot find how to upgrade them to 9.6.1 (it says not available from the Australian App Store - so how did I get it onto the iMac?). I'm seeking an answer from Apple and will let you know how I go.

BTW, not impressed with the new 'photos', I liked many of the functions of iPhoto and I do NOT need my photo library in the 'cloud' (where I'd have to pay to maintain it!)

You do not have to us the Cloud with Photos if you don't want to.

As for updating:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
