Best Mac for music production

Whats up folks! At the moment I'm doing my music production on my mid 2011 27" iMac with 2,7 GHz i5 processor and 8GB 1333MHz ram

but lately it has been working slow and now its time for a upgrade.

I'm searching for the ultimate mac for producing music. I want to have some performance room so it will work smooth for at least 3-4 years before its time for a future upgrade. I'm also running heavy projects, sometimes with 60 different channels, each with at least one plugin so power is the word.

My first alternative was to buy a 15" 2.2 GHz i7 Macbook Pro because of its portability. My recent iMac that runs pretty slow has a 2,7 GHz i5 processor which should be faster?.. but the macbook have twice the internal storage and is also faster (16GB 1600MHz vs 8 GB 1333 MHz). The macbook also has flash storage and I'm rockin old school 7200 rpm. Does the flash storage have a big advantage in workflow?

I'm not really sure if this 1899 dollar upgrade is valuable and how much more powerful the Macbook will be compared to my current workstation.

The pros with the Macbook pro are: Portability, more and faster internal storage, Flash storage.

Cons are: Smaller screen, -1899 dollar in the pocket (a lot of money for a student), less powerful than a desktop mac for the same price.

To sum up I wasn't convinced that the Macbook Pro was the computer for my needs so I started to look on the latest iMac 27". I realised that I got a lot more performance for the same money, more than i thought. It wasn't portable but that's not a huge deal for my uses.

For 1999 dollars the specs on the iMac are: 3,2 GHz i5, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, flash storage, 1GB GeForce GT 755M video memory. This felt more worth the upgrade but I wasn't 100% convinced.

I have also compared the Mac mini with pretty much maxed out specs as an upgrade. For 1199 the mini comes with 3GHz dual core i7 (booth the macbook pro and the iMac have quad core processors) 8GB 1600 MHz RAM, flash storage. It is more valuable but less powerful and requires a display.

Do you have any advices to make my decision easier? Which mac do you guys use as your main workstation and why? Excuse me for potential misspellings (I'm swedish) and thanks for helpful answers.

Here is my priority:

  1. RAM - buy as much as you can. 8GB is NOT enough and will be a bottleneck not matter how fast your processor will be. Keep in mind that most Macs now cannot be upgraded later for more RAM as it was possible in the past.
  2. SSD - If you record audio or use big Sample Libraries, this is where the main throughout bottleneck comes in. Prices come down, but again, keep in mind that you might not be able to upgrade later.
  3. CPU - Now, whatever is left in your budget, get the fastest CPU

Hope that helps
