White Screen of Death & Preventative Maintenance

Hello, folks!

Last night, my Macbook Pro (15-inch, late 2011) had its first WSOD. Earlier in the day, I'd reset the PRAM/MVRAM/SMC because the computer had been freezing/stuttering for 10-20 seconds at (seemingly) random intervals for the last few months (rainbow ball and all, no matter what programs were open), and I'd read that it might help. I also turned off/deleted any old programs that seemed to be taking up space or I no longer used, in case an extension was causing the problem. I'm by no means a computer expert when it comes to the inner workings, and this is a computer I purchased from my old workplace.

I'd also run Etrecheck earlier in the day to see if there was anything glaring that might cause the freezing. A few startup processes had failed.

Then, WSOD, in the middle of working on an Illustrator file. I rebooted a few times with no success, restarted in Safe Mode and only got a stripey blue screen. Sometimes, the display would have lots of little lines as the logo appeared and the loading icon spun, and others, it would just be white/grey. No matter what, the system wouldn't start. This went on for about an hour, I think. Eventually, I just walked away to cry, the computer shut itself down (without any prompt from me), and when I restarted it, it worked again. I did all of my backups, installed the newest OS (I put it off because of Cintiq compatibility problems some had reported), and ran Etrecheck again, Different problems, but still problems, and I feel like I'm running on borrowed time.

I don't know if these failures have anything to do with the WSOD, and I discovered that my model Mac has known issues that I've had in the past as well (https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/), but if anyone knows how to fix these problems listed here, I'd be grateful. I'm a little over an hour from the nearest Apple Store. Thanks, geniuses!
