When I create a document in pages and save it, it automatically gets saved to a zip file. And then no one else can open it. Even other Mac users.

I have created a few documents in pages that automatically get saved to a zip file. (This never happened before)

And while I can open it on my Mac, if I send it to someone (even another Mac user) they can't open it. I have tried exporting to a different format, saving it to dropbox or google doc.

Ultimately I want to be able to save it to a different format other than zip

Only IOS Pages, and Pages for iCloud will add the .zip extension to Pages documents that are sent via email. That is because these documents are package folders (directories), and you cannot email a directory without first compressing (.zip) it. Uncompressed Pages documents are not compatible with Dropbox, and Google Docs has no idea what to do with a .pages document — zipped or not.

When you send a zipped Pages document to another Mac user, they can do one of two things:

  1. Right-click on the attachment .pages.zip icon, choose Save Attachment…, and then simply double-click the icon in the Finder to uncompress it.

The caveat is that they need a version of Pages that is compatible with the version that created that Pages document

  2. Right-click on the attachment, select Quick Look Attachment, choose uncompress, and then drag the .pages document out to desktop, or open it with the correct version of Pages.

My thoughts in these days of Pages document incompatibility issues is to send an MS Word document that all versions of Pages can open, or if no edits are necessary, then send as a PDF.
