Q: Can't verify apple email because I can't access apple email and vice versa

My apple ID works on iTunes and on all my devices to download from iTunes/App store, however when I come to access iCloud to clean up my account I get a message saying 'email not verified' then when I go to access my apple ID I get another message saying 'verification email has been sent'!! But where has it been sent and why can't I access my account? My password works fine. Please help.
