Q: I can't open an existing iDVD project to burn more DVDs.

I can't open existing iDVD project to burn more DVDs. When I select the project, message pops up "No Themes Installed, Quit iDVD and install iDVD again, or click "Look for Themes" and locate the themes folder." I never had problems with burning DVDs of this saved project in the past.This message occurred before I recently updated from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I haven't tried to reinstall iDVD because I didn't know if it would affect any current projects. When I clicked on "Look for Themes", I found several Themes folders but don't know what to do after this step. Thanks in advance for any advice.

 

OSX 10.6.8, Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz, Memory 4GB, Storage Capacity 249.72 GB (46 GB available). MackbookPro is 6.5 yrs old. I plan to get a new one soon. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

It depends on what version of iLife you installed iDVD from:

 

It is worth noting that the version of iDVD 7 included with iLife 11 only includes themes from iDVD 5-7. If you want all the older themes you should buy iLife 9, which has the same version of iDVD 7 but with all the themes, which none of the iDVD 7 updaters available from Apple Downloads include.

 

Currently the only certain way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage. You need to do this if you are running Snow Leopard.

    Hi Klaus,

     

    Thanks so much for your response. I already have iDVD 7.1.2 on my laptop. I'm not sure what version of iLife I installed iDVD from. I can't find the iLife disc so is it possible iLife already came on my Macbook Pro when I bought my laptop in late 2008? I looked under Applications and didn't see iLife listed.


    So is the theme I used for my existing iDVD project causing the problem now that iDVD has been updated?

    iLife is not listed as such, just the applications that come with it are listed in your Applications folder, i.e. iMovie, iDVD, iTunes and Garageband.

     

    So is the theme I used for my existing iDVD project causing the problem now that iDVD has been updated?

    Hi Klaus,

     

    Thanks for confirming that iLife isn't listed, but just the applications. I will try and create another iDVD project using another theme to see if that solves the problem because it sounds like my only other option is to purchase iLife '9. Since I plan to get a new Macbook Pro in the near future to replace my aging laptop, it doesn't make sense to buy iLife 9. Huge thanks again for your time and help!!!

    The iDVD themes are normally located in your Home/User/Library/Application Support folder in a folder titled iDVD:

    Finder001.jpg

    Or sometimes they get installed into the HD/Library/Application Support folder.  Check both places to see if the folder is there and what these are in the Themes folder. 


    Sometimes iDVD loses the link/filepath during a system upgrade.     If you do find the themes folder launch iDVD, go to it's Advanced preferences pan and point iDVD to the Themes folder.

    Hi Old Toad,

     

    Thanks so much for your response. I clicked on the Library folder, Application Support, iDVD and Installed Themes. Inside Installed Themes, there were six folders titled iDVD 1 through iDVD 6 and each one is empty. I launched iDVD but when I click on Advanced, all the options are gray. I clicked on iDVD and Preferences was also in gray. So I don't know how to "go to it's Advanced preferences pan and point iDVD to the Themes folder." The fact that all six iDVD folders were empty in the Installed Themes folder doesn't look very good.


    Any further advice? Thanks again for your help!

    The fact that all six iDVD folders were empty in the Installed Themes folder doesn't look very good.

    Right.  You'll have to get one of the iLife disks to install the themes again.

     

    If you do install from an iLife disk move your current iDVD 7.1.2 app to a folder somewhere else.  Install iDVD and the themes from the disk, delete the newly installed iDVD and replace it with your current iDVD 7.1.2.
