Q: IMessage

Can someone help me can an better understand of how the IMessage works to where the messages are displayed and able to be replied to on an MAC, Ipod, or IPad ? I'm a CS major and I'm doing some summer research on somethings that I found interesting and could complete projects on and just need some help from my fellow peers. I know that this is the best place to come for Apple type of questions.
