Vertical Bars and Black Screen

Hi everyone, thanks for reading and for any information you have. I have just received a Macbook Pro that on turning on, displays wide bands while on the apple logo, it's not the usual grey either. After a little while the screen goes black or blank.

It's Model Number is A1297 with (C) 2010 Apple

Is this related to the BGA / graphics faults? Is it something Apple will repair for free as it has been a massive issue with MBPs? How do I book in the repair ?

Thanks.

Ok thanks for the info however I suspect that it may be one of the faulty batch.

Suggest 2010 models may be affected.

I need to find a way to determine, with evidence if it is as I will press for a free repair.

As a technician what tests can I run apart from ApDiags.

I provided the copyright date not model date, obviously the copyright tag and date is not significant / relevant to the actual date of manufacture. So should not be used as a method to date the item! I was not prepared to share the serial number on here.

I mean someone should have pointed me to the page where you enter your serial number to identify the product.

Going forward, I hope that it can be repaired for my customer under the repair scheme.

I consider this issue closed and no further responses are required.

Thanks!

One point of information. An A 1297 model is assigned to 17 " MBPs from the early 2009 model to the late 2011 model. Since the early 2011 MBP was introduced in February 2011, I fail to understand what significance a copyright date of 2010 might have. At any rate, my assumption that you had a 2010 MBP rather than a 2011 was valid, though as it turns out, not true.

Ciao.

In my job assumptions are bad. I am a Windows (sigh) computer technician, though, I can do many soft repairs and minor upgrades on Macs. Now, I have learned how to correctly identify them through my own research. I was hoping that this forum would enlighten me with the information to search and determine specific details.

Assuming it's 2010 based on loose facts and then delivering a verdict of non repairable is far from useful. Digging deeper and enquiring and then responding with the correct information would have been a better approach!

Complaining about free help isn't all that great an approach in my book. I see plenty of people who bother to use Etrecheck and post the results get help here. And even my favorite complaint, "What do I do now that I've spilled "x" on my laptop" usually get treated with respect.

The free help that I've seen (and gotten) here tends to be better than the help that I used to pay Windows for, back when I used a pc.
