May 20, 2015 7:04 AM in response to Lauralock1by Glenn Leblanc,Under File, choose Recently Deleted. Delete them from that album also.
When Photos migrated the iPhoto library, those libraries were hard linked together. Deleting photos from one won't delete the photos from the other library or gain any space on your hard drive. So if you still have the migrated iPhotos library, the amount of space should remain the same.

May 20, 2015 7:04 AM in response to Lauralock1by léonie,Have you emptied the "recently deleted"album as well? Use the file menu > show recently deleted.
IF you migrated an iPhoto library, you will have to delete the photos in the iPhoto library as well, since photos and iPhoto are sharing the photos.

Oct 6, 2015 4:55 AM in response to léonieby Lauralock1,If the photos are being shared between the iPhoto and photos library, how do I delete the photos in the iPhoto library without compromising them in the photo library?

Oct 6, 2015 5:02 AM in response to Lauralock1by Glenn Leblanc,After the initial setup, changes made to one library will not affect the other. Any pictures added or deleted or changes made within one program will not affect the other.
So, you can delete any or all photos from iPhoto and it won't affect the Photo's Library.

Oct 6, 2015 5:06 AM in response to Glenn Leblancby Lauralock1,It looks like each library is about 130 GB. If I delete the iPhoto library, will I gain 130GB of memory on my hard drive? Do I delete it by moving it to trash can?

You will reclaim the storage for the photos that have been deleted in both your iPhoto Library and your Photos library,
Yes, move the iPhoto Library to trash can end empty the Trash. But I'd keep a backup copy of your iPhoto LIbrary on a different drive, just in case.

Oct 6, 2015 5:21 AM in response to Lauralock1by Glenn Leblanc,In addition to Leonie's comments, moving the iPhoto library to another drive will break the hard links of the original photos between the 2 libraries and will be totally independent from there on.

Oct 8, 2015 7:45 AM in response to Glenn Leblancby trags75,This was very, very helpful as it is not clear at all when upgrading to El Capitan that there are serious migrating compatibility issues with regard to the impact on hard drive storage. Thanks!!

Oct 8, 2015 9:31 AM in response to Glenn Leblancby Lauralock1,From the posts above, it left me with the impression that after the initial migration from IPhoto to Photos that there was now no link between the two separate libraries. A change in one would not effect the other. If I delete the entire iPhoto library (which I don't use anymore) because all photos are now in Photos, I do not loose any photos. Is that correct?
As for El Capitan migrating compatibility issues, can you give a little more info on this as I just updated to it.

The linkage is using hard links to the originals and the previews - there are not links between the libraries but both have had links to the same photos and if any hard link remains then the linked photos are not removed -- Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
not sure what you are asking about migration -- Apple's document is here - How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support - and Old Toad's is here - Photos 2.0 vs iPhoto 9.6.1: Features and Capabilities

ans as to storage there is no significant impact on hard drive storage - Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
