Q: After the Apple Watch 1.0.1 Update, Heart Rate stopped working...

After I updated my Watch to 1.0.1, the heart rate monitor no longer monitors my heart rate in the background.  It only monitors my heart rate when I ask it to take a reading.

This is really, really annoying.  Has anyone else experienced this?  It was working perfectly before the update.

Since I don't have time to call AppleCare at the moment, I also reported the problem online via the Watch feedback page.

    Thank you

Regarding this thread: i knew there was something fishy going on with that sensor, glad i found the way here... Gave a feedback too, hoping the problem will be gone soon. Battery life is better now though

I have also had this problem and reported it to apple through the feedback page. Thanks D'AnconiaCopper for the link.

Bit disappointed that the watch has been out for less than a month, has already had an update to fix security holes, and it has broken more than it has fixed.

Thanks for the link, I have the same problem. It does work ok during workouts, but otherwise it is sporadic to say the least.

    Please report it here...

    https://www.apple.com/feedback/watch.html

The more reports of the issue they get the more likely we will get a quick fix.

I have the same issue.  HR is working 10% of the time when it used to work 80-90%.

    I have filed feedback.

Mine was having this issue until immediately after midnight last night.  Now it has resumed the heart rate monitoring every 10 minutes.  I wish i could say i did something different to make this happen, but I do not know.

Mine randomly worked every 10 minutes for 3 times in a row last night.  Hasn't updated since.

I know people were complaining about the heart monitor misreading your heart rate sometimes when the watch first came out.  I wonder if they put a setting in there to ignore the reading if it doesn't trust it (i.e. not placed right on your wrist, weak measurement, etc.) to help make the readings it does do more accurate.

Tell me if I'm wrong though - doesn't the Exercise Ring require heart rate measurements to tell if you're getting a workout?  I was pretty active yesterday and failed to fill up that ring.  I'm thinking this heart rate issue could be making that ring not function right as well.

I am guessing you were sleeping at the time?  Mine also worked fine during the 7 or so hours I was asleep.  I am guessing something was changed that is making it much more susceptible to movement causing no or inaccurate readings.  I wonder if they possibly decreased the intensity of the LEDs to save battery life?

Unfortunately, it has only recorded two readings since I got up at 6AM EDT.

I have owned quite a few optical HR wrist based wearables (including the Basis B1, Basis Peak, TomTom Cardio Runner) and the intensity of the LEDs has a huge affect on the accuracy of the readings especially during exercise.  Up until the 1.01 update the Apple Watch was the best at acquiring and maintaining accurate readings, now it's is the worst of any I have owned.

Lets hope they get it fixed fast or it is going back.

Just to give a response from the other end - I have the 38mm Sport and my heart rate is monitored on the mark every 10 minutes.

(Except for the 6-8 hours when I'm asleep and the watch is charging).

I have to sometimes force-quet Health or the Activity app on my iPhone 6 to get the new data to show up but it's definitely there.

Regarding the energy saving theory - I don't think that's the case since in the normal 10min cycle the watch will only use the

green LED when absolutely necessary and fall back to infrared reading when possible (less power hungry).

[see here if you're interested in the details: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204666]

One thing I noticed however is that there seems to be a *some* connection between movement and reading accuracy.

I use the original white band with the watch and it fits snuggly to my wrist, or like the user guide states it "it doesn't move but is not to tight".

I did a longer walk today on mostly flat terrain to improve my step counting and the watch did do a constant measure of my heart rate.

I noticed that two times in that 40 minutes it recorded two spikes of about 200 that lasted for about a minute...

That data seems odd as the readings before and after are pretty much my normal heart rates when walking and I didn't do anything fancy

such as running up hills or even getting the least bit exhausted.

So there seems to be at least something realted to the movement vs. reading theory...

    [Also: sorry for ranting!]
