I am having a problem uploading my document on indeed.com. What should I do?

I use pages and I picked a template to make a resume. Now everytime I am on indeed.com or monster.com and have to upload my resume to apply for a job, my resume can't be sent.

You original Pages document is likely not an approved file format for Indeed and Monster. Either export and upload as PDF, or export as Word, and then scale that 500Kb Word document down to 11K in opening, and resaving it in either LibreOffice, or Word in Office for Mac 2011. Then upload the smaller Word document because these sites place a limit on document size, too.

It is not the **** computer. Monster and Indeed do not accept Pages documents.

Open your résumé in Pages. From the File menu, choose Export, and select PDF. If your version of Pages offers an option between Good, Better, Best, select Best, and then when you get to the Save panel, give it a meaningful name, and save it to your Desktop. If Monster, or Indeed will except PDF, then upload per their instructions and you are done. Exporting to a Word document follows the same approach, but omits the quality choices.

I have no idea what any of that advice means. I'm really disappointed that one of the main reasons I bought this **** computer is for job hunting and now I can't even use it for that purpose without this major inconvenience. I don't want to learn to become a technician. I want something that works in the first place. Can you give step by step instructions on what you advised?

Hi Peter,

From your post above:

Note: Currently, Microsoft Word 2013 documents are not supported by Monster. If you are using Word 2013, you can go to File > Save As > select the Save as type Word 97-2003 Document (.doc). This version will work on Monster.

"…their instructions are so vague that it is unclear as to whether they require Word doc/x files older than 2013 or newer than 2013."

Seems pretty clear to me. They tell you to "Save as type Word 97-2003 (.doc)" which is a format older than Word 2013 (.docx).

Pages 4 ( '09) exports to .doc, Pages 5 offers both .docx and .doc formats as Export to Word choices.

Regards,

Barry

To be fair they buried the details of what is required deep in their Help, this is from Monster:

What are the guidelines for uploading a Microsoft Word resume?

Last Updated:12/20/16

Please review the following guidelines before you upload a Word resume:

  • Text within the body can't exceed 500 KB and the file size itself, including any images, can't exceed 5 MB.
  • If you're using Word's Track Changes tool, you'll need to accept or reject all changes on your resume and save it to your computer before uploading.
  • Resumes that contain viruses will not be accepted.

You can also upload a resume in PDF, RTF, or TXT format: Read how here.
You can also upload a resume via Google Drive and via DropBox.

Note: Currently, Microsoft Word 2013 documents are not supported by Monster. If you are using Word 2013, you can go to File > Save As > select the Save as type Word 97-2003 Document (.doc). This version will work on Monster.

Pages documents are in .pages format, but can be turned into usable formats such as:

Menu > File > Export > Word or PDF

In your case it will be best Exported to PDF to retain all the layout and format and because their instructions are so vague that it is unclear as to whether they require Word doc/x files older than 2013 or newer than 2013.

Fortunately for whoever created this website, they did not have to apply for the jobs themselves, because they do not seem to have a clue.
