It just displays the Apple on my TV

I was using the unit last week to mirror my iPad. I tried to mirror another iPad, but it did't work. The iPad kept turning off the mirror option so I went into the ATV settings looking for anything to help. I pulled the power cord to reset it and when I powered it back up, all that displays on the TV screen is the Apple. I've tried two different TV's with the same results. I tried resetting the ATV based on the instructions, but nothing works. Is the unit broken? Is there a master reset? My ipads are on 8.3. Does the ATV need to be upgraded? How can I do that if i can't start it?
