iTunes Media keys no longer working

I have a relatively new mac book pro (3 months old) and I have noticed that the media keys used to control iTunes do not seem to work. I checked within the system preferences to make sure that they were not set up incorrectly but have not been able to find a solution to get them to work for itunes.
