How are you trying to "copy photos out"?

Where is your Photos library?  In your Pictures holder or on an external drive?

To export photos from the Photos.app select the photos and use the command "File > Export" to a folder on the Desktop, not "copy and Paste" or "Drag and Drop".   Copy and Paste or Drag and Drop will only work for applications that have been updated to be compatible with Photos.

Thank you very much.  This seems helpful for my own photos.  Is there a way to do it for shared photos (that someone else posted)?

YOu can also select photos in Shared Albums and use "file > export" to save them to a folder on your Mac.

This doesn't work.  When I do file>export, all the options are grayed out.

OK.  I have a workaround.  I can select the photos and do "import".  That moves them from share photos to "regular" photos.  Once in the regular photo set, I can export them.  Not a very good design of the UI in Photos, though.  It seems like a bug.
