VPN not working via hotel WIFI

I am facing a strange issue currently. I'm in a hotel using their WIFI and I'm trying to connect to a VPN.

My Android phone connects to the VPN no problem, either via the hotel WIFI or via 3G.

My MacBook will not connect via to the VPN via the WIFI, but will connect to the VPN if I use my Android phone as a WIFI hotspot over 3G.

I cannot understand how the mobile can connect but the MacBook can't when they're both using the same WIFI! Clearly the MacBook setup is ok as it works over the mobile WIFI hotspot.

I'm on Yosemite 10.10.3 and using an L2TP VPN.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can try please?

Thanks

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Thanks Illass, I wasn't aware I'd picked the wrong one, is there a way of moving the post to another forum?

Sadly I'm not getting any error other than "The L2TP-VPN server did not respond".

I'm not aware of this Connection Doctor that you talk about, how do I find/launch that as it sounds like a reasonable starting place :-)

What log files could I also check for more information?

Thanks for your reply.

Illaass,

Thanks again, I tried the Network Diagnostics and it found no problem with the WIFI connection but sadly it can't assist me with any VPN connection diagnostics as it can only work with Ethernet or WIFI issues.

In the past I've used "Console" to take a look at what's going on, but it's quite hard to see as there is just so much logging information going on all the time.

Thanks for helping to move this post to the correct area.

I've done some more research looking in "Console" while I make a successful connection via another WIFI and then whilst I have an unsuccessful connection via the hotel WIFI.

I've found that both sets of results are identical through more than 80% of the setting up of the connection but the successful log gets to this bit:

***********************

IPSec connection established

caught rtm:2, need update interface address list

L2TP connection established.

***********************

Meanwhile the unsuccessful connection goes like this instead, i.e. instead of the "caught rtm:2, need to update interface address list" and then "L2TP connection established" it starts going through a load of other stuff as shown below

***********************

IPSec connection established

@@@@@@ data from readmsg:

.

.

[Load of Hex]

.

.

92 bytes message received from xxx.xxxx.xxx.xxx[4500] to 192.168.xxx.xxx[4500]

start search for IKE-Session. target xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx[4500].

.

.

.

IKEv1 Information-Notice: transmit success. (R-U-THERE? ACK).

received a valid R-U-THERE, ACK sent

IKE Packet: receive success. (Information message).

L2TP cannot connect to the server

***********************

Does this mean anything to anyone? Any thoughts on what might be going wrong?

Thanks
