I have a new iBook that I created in iBooks Author. When I open it in iBooks for OS X, everything seems fine.
When I open it in iBooks on my very up to date iPad, if I click a link that takes me to another part of the book, I do not get a "back to page" button. I have flip 1 page at a time all the way back to where I was. It works fine with ePubs from other sources.
The command is hidden: Tap on the page to display the iBook menu, and then tap on the Bookmarks icon. You will be able to go back to to a previously viewed page from there.
The menu is hidden and appears when you tap, but the menu is at the top. The "back to page" button should be on the bottom left and it is not. It does not appear with tapping anywhere.
The ibooks app on the iPad behaves differently than the ibooks app on the mac. "The back to page" link you refer to is only available on the mac version. On the iPad, you get that functionality only when tapping on the screen to make the top menu appear and then tap on bookmarks to reveal the list of bookmarks as well as a link to the last page visited.
