I can't get my Intuos Small touch and pen wacom to work properly. Any ideas why?

I can't get my Intuos Small touch and pen wacom to work properly. The pen acts very erratic. The OS is Lion and I have tried various compatible drivers but nothing seems to work. I was told I'll have to update my OS as the only possible solution. Please help!
