Time Capsule, created new wifi network, cannot connect to internet

New 3TB Time Capsule

old AirPort Extreme Base Station (2003)

old Alcatel DSL modem

Mac OS 10.9.4

Easily created new wifi network for my new Time Capsule, and the new network is visible on all four devices (Mac Mini, MacBookPro, iPad Air, iPhone). But cannot connect to the internet on any device. Flashing amber light on Time Capsule.

Didn't extend existing network for fear of doing something that would result in no internet, so have reverted to old AirPort Extreme Base Station and existing wifi network.

Both AirPort Extreme Base Station and Alcatel DSL modem are old (2003 and before), which is one reason I got the Time Capsule.

Should I try it again, extending the existing network instead of creating a new one? Would that make it connect to internet?

The old Alcatel modem .. what is the model number? Is it setup as router or is it a pure modem.

The new TC cannot connect to the old 2003 Extreme by wireless..

I would remove the old extreme entirely.. plug ethernet from DSL modem to the WAN port of the TC and try the setup again..

Do a factory reset before you start. I recommend the following.

Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.

2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

If you still have trouble I need specific details on the modem and if you are using pppoe in the TC to do the setup.

I would strongly recommend a new modem.. even though the old alcatel are great modems.. in fact many old modems of that age are amazing.. that is now 12 years old.. however they were tricky.. the Home and Pro models are only 10mbit connections and were wired with reverse polarity on the ethernet.. which works sometimes and not others.

Thanks for replying, @LaPastenague.

I think I got that Alcatel modem in 1996!

I talked to Apple Support and AT&T support, went through many exercises with Ethernet cable connections, rebooting, etc. My ancient Alcatel modem does not work with the Time Capsule and is not supported by AT&T. So I am looking at either a new DSL modem or switching to some other form (e.g., AT&T's U-verse).

Thanks for the support, @Bob.

I spent 45 minutes in the ATT store, intending to go with a new DSL modem, but swiftly fell under the spell of U-verse (and the very kind, patient, knowledgeable, helpful, smart — and cute and sweet — salesman. What can I say? I'm a senior citizen. 😉 )

The monthly cost (for the first year anyway) will be the same as I pay now, for speedier service, and — most importantly — one morning next week an ATT installer will come here and get it up and running. ::crosses fingers::

So I guess I'll have no use for the router built into the Time Capsule, huh?

But here's another question for you: Can I partition the 3TB? Say, 2TB for Time Machine backups and 1TB for regular ol' storage? Or don't I want to go there? I guess I'm thinking of doing this because my only (old) experience with Time Machine, it was difficult to just find what I was looking for, vs. going to a folder of files in regular storage. Maybe it's better now.

Thanks!

You cannot partition the TC drive.. you can setup a dmg file for data.

See Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html

TM is not the easiest backup to use.. at least when it comes to recovery.. if you want easier backup I would recommend a clone to a USB drive. eg Carbon Copy Cloner.. it is then hugely easy to find your files.. it is after all a clone.

The Uverse is a nice product....my son has one in his home.....but the Time Capsule that he also owns runs circles around the wireless capability of the Uverse router.

So, if you are interested in performance and wireless signal range, you would want to use the wireless on the Time Capsule. You could keep the wireless on the Uverse reserved for guests, or the kids when they visit.

If for some reason you want to use the lower performing Uverse wireless network, and you don't need another wireless network, you could turn off the wireless service on the Time Capsule with a few clicks and use it as a wired hard drive.

Time Capsule, created new wifi network, cannot connect to internet
