Device Enrollment Program- Couldn't assign your devices

I have the initial set up for the DEP done. Now when I try to enroll a device by entering the device's serial number I get the following error "Couldn't Assign Your Devices. The data you provided may be incorrect. Please verify your serial numbers and try again." All of our devices are purchased directly from Apple and I know the serial number is correct. This is my first time setting anything like this up as I am filling in temporarily for a position so any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hi erickson54,

Do you have your MDM linked with DEP? I wonder if the "Couldn't Assign Your Devices..." error indicates a problem with ADP communicating with your MDM.

I should have included that in my first post, but yes, I believe I have it linked correctly through MobileIron. I should also add that when I try to add by order number it says there are no orders available to choose from.

I'd double check your Apple Customer Number(s). Your organization may have multiple Apple customer numbers, which you can add to your account on the DEP website once you’re approved. If it can't find an order number, it may have been purchased under a different Apple Customer Number...

That was my initial thought, but I pulled up the invoice from when we purchased the iPads and the customer number is the same as the one that is entered in the DEP website.

Hmmm… that is strange. At this point, I'd contact Apple Enterprise Support at 1-866-752-7753 so that they can look at your account.

I have run into this exact situation.

The issue is that iPads can only be enrolled in DEP if they are purchased...I'm sorry...SOLD a certain way. If the devices are purchased from Apple, they STILL have to be sold a certain way to you in order for the machines to be DEP compatible.

In my situation, even though we had purchased the devices directly form Apple, the serial numbers and the order number will not add any device to DEP.

I talked to Enterprise support, and was told to have "have the Apple Rep return the order, and repurchase it through the DEP approved process."

When I talked to our rep, I got the impression he either did not understand what I relayed to him, did not know how to perform the actions or did not want to perform the actions required. Our rep kicked it up to a higher level, but not until after asking me who gave me that information.

If anyone gets this working, I would appreciate a heads up, as I do not relish cinfigurating 30 iPads.

Hi , i have same problem while adding devices to Apple MDM Server(Profile Manager) in deploy.apple.com "Couldn't Assign Your Devices. The data you provided may be incorrect. Please verify your serial numbers and try again." . Have you solved that? Thanks!!

Contact Apple Enterprise Support at 1-866-752-7753. I can't quite remember how I got this working and looked back through my emails and couldn't find anything pertaining to this. I know after contacting them we were able to get this configured. Best of luck.

After talking to my Local Apple Store, it was determined that only devices that were purchased through "SAP" are enroll able into DEP. If I was to walk into the store and purchase 10 Macs, they would not quality. I would contact a local apple store business team, as they can get this fixed in most cases.
