I've been reading about new viruses for Mac computers, Ipad, etc. Are there any good apps to install that would keep these from getting on my computer? Also is there a list of the names, if so how can I find them or at least know what their names are

There are none, and never have been any viruses that affect OS X. Many so-called security experts throw around the word virus when what they're actually talking about is a Trojan, or even just a phishing attempt. If you haven't jailbroken an iPhone or iPad, the chances of getting any kind of malware on one is essentially zero.
