More memory will help. Here is a link to how to add more memory

http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_13_unibody_early11/

You can get memory here too

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM

You Mac can take 16 GB (2x8 GB) If you can't afford 16 GB, then replace one 2 GB stice with one 8 GB stick

Also remove Genieo, it is adware which does slow up the Mac

http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/

Replacing the rotating hard drive with an SSD will also help with speed.

Don't replace one 2 GB stick with an 8 GB stick. For better performance, you want to have the two RAM sticks be exactly the same. So upgrade to two 4 GB sticks (total of 8 GB) if you can't afford two 8 GB (total of 16 GB).

Another thing to consider is reinstalling an older version of OS X (not Yosemite), like Mavericks.
