2 External monitors on MPB 15" with AMD Radeon R9

Hi,

I would like to know if the latest MBP 15" with AMD Radeon R9 (came out on 05/19/2015) can support 2 external monitors at 3840x2160 at 60Hz and which cable do I need (Thunderbolt to Display port, Thunderbolt to Mini display port)??

I'm planning on buying 2 x BenQ BL3101PH if it only works at 60Hz, if not, I might go with DELL P2815Q, which is a lot cheaper!

Thank you for the help!

Hello Jose,

It looks like with the resolution and refresh rate that you are looking for you will only be able to do that with one display and not two. Take a look at the article below to go over the tech specs for the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015.

  • "Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on up to two external displays, both at millions of colors"

This says it can support open laptop lid, and 2 more monitors at 4k resolution, I'm assuming by connecting to the two thunderbolt ports, and I also assume 60h, since it only specifies 30hz or less on the hdmi ports.

  • "Support for up to 5120-by-2160 resolution at 60Hz on a single external display (model with AMD Radeon R9 M370X only)"

This says it can support a single external 5k resolution monitor.

Am I mistaken?

Thunderbolt 2 has DisplayPort 1.2 as a subset (the other piece being pcie) and is the same connector physically as mini DisplayPort. so 2 mini Display port to mini DisplayPort cables or 2 mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables should do the trick. I'm not sure you can daisy chain devices off the display's with this setup.
