Lost password, iPhone disabled, iTunes won't restore it.

Please help. I started restoring my daughter's iPhone 4s via the newest iTunes update. Half through the process MacBook entered sleep mode. Trying to restore agian gets me now an error message: device not eligible. The suggested fix is to run a code from Terminal and find the host, but Terminal won't find the entry “gs.apple.com”. Hope anyone can help. Cheers.

Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:

Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.

1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the

other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.

2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds

until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.

* If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the

Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,

release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.

3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the

device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,

let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some

charge, and then start with step 2 again.

4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.

When this screen appears you can release the Home button:

5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:

6. Use iTunes to restore the device.

If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.

Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

Are you doing this on her computer or on another computer? If so, then try on her computer. Also, be sure you are using the current version of iTunes and OS X. Beyond this I don't really know what to suggest. It should restore in DFU mode. You may have to try several times. Does the device appear in iTunes? If not did you look at the link suggested? Have you read iPhone and iPod touch- Unable to update or restore.

Thanks for the reply Kappy, but unfortunately it doesn't help.

I did started the recovery successfully the first time using your method.

The problem occurred after MacBook went into sleep mode.

When I try to restore from scratch it says that the device is not eligible...

Kappy asked me to try to help. What is the exact error message? I'm pretty sure there's an error number. 3194, perhaps, or 1015. And most likely the message in full is "device is not eligible for the requested build." If that is correct it's likely that iTunes only partially downloaded the update file before it went to sleep, and the image file is corrupt. You need to delete the image file so it starts downloading from scratch. It's location is in "~/Library/itunes/iPhone Software Updates". The Library directory is hidden by default, so you will have to make hidden files viewable to see it.

Regarding gs.apple.com, it should not be present in the hosts file. So not finding it is a good thing.

Thanks for your reply, Lawrence.

I'm writing from Europe (Danmark), that's way then time lap 🙂

I will try your suggestion ASAP as it sounds pretty wise.

I didn't think about it, and I wouldn't have known where to look for that file, anyway.

So, thanks in advance.

The only strange thing is that I just tried on another Mac. Everything started the right way, where I had to agree to the terns previous launching the restore, but then I got the error message again... 😟 So, the corrupted file might be inside the phone, no?

Anyway, I'll try on my computer back home and see if it helps.

Thanks again.

F.

Hi Lawrence.

Unfortunately I didn't succeed.

I did find the corrupt file you mentioned and deleted it, but by the end of the restore process I got the same error message "device is not eligible for the requested build."

I have tried several times and nothing works.

I am pretty stuck here and don't know what to do.

Thanks again for your intervention anyway and regards to Kappy.

Are you using iTunes to update the phone. Specifically:

  • Make sure you have either the latest version of iTunes (v12) or the immediate previous (11)
  • Connect the phone to the computer
  • Click on its icon in iTunes
  • Click Restore iPhone
  • Do not download any image files; let iTunes do it.

If you still get error 3194 it's possible that the phone has been jailbroken at some time in the past. If this is a possibility there are other things to try, such as a DFU mode restore.

ADDITIONALLY:

It's also possible there was a beta version of iOS on the phone.

Lost password, iPhone disabled, iTunes won't restore it.
