Iphone 6 headphones don't take picture on phone!

I Bought a plug and shoot selfie stick where I plug the cord into the hole where you put your headphones in and it doesn't work. I tried taking a picture with headphones that came with the phone using the buttons on the headphones and they didn't work at all. I know I have to fix something in my settings but I'm not sure what to fix. help! Thank you
