Q: Hundreds of photos not showing since update from Time Machine to Photos on new MacBookPro

I have followed the instructions for updating the operating system and then rebuilding the Photo Library from my back up on Time Machine, onto my new MacBook Pro.

Most of the 33000 photos have transferred beautifully, but there are hundreds (maybe a few thousand) that are not showing thumbnails or the actual photos. I did the Command + Option Key and Library Rebuild twice. They are not showing still.

I can tell the photos are "there" because the locations and dates are showing as well as the shapes that indicate the photos. But there is no photo I can open or see in either thumbnail view or even when I select the photo and try to open it.

This is what I see:

Any thoughts on what I need to do? I know the back ups are still on TimeMachine. Should I begin again?

I did have to switch from iPhoto to Photos and made all those updates... just want all my photos back.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), Photos

    And what instructions are thoses

Something has gone wrong and unless you actually share what you did and how you did it we have no way to help

Basically there is no "rebuilding" from a TM backup - you restore the backup using TimeMachine - and upgrading the OS does not require any rebuilding or restoring - simply upgrading

I restored the back up from Time Machine to iPhoto on the MacBook Pro. Then I rebuilt the thumbnails in iPhoto. Then I updated the operating system (I read this on one of the Apple pages that I needed to do that). Then I installed Photos. I used Command + Option to rebuild the photo library. It restored most of the thumbnails and photos, but left many others in the condition I showed you in the image above.

    Is this what you mean?

Here's the link I used (instructions) that I followed:

iPhoto '11: Restoring from Time Machine

Let me know if this was not the right thing to do.

Was your iPhoto library damaged, is that why you restored it from Time Machine?

No. I was simply changing to a new machine. My old MacBook Pro died so when I bought the new MacBook Pro, I simply brought over my Time Machine back ups for all my files, apps, and the iPhoto library. Nothing damaged. I rebuilt the thumbnails before I updated to Photos app using the Command + Option. But even then, some of the photos didn't show (about one month's worth).

Since I launched Photos, many more are not showing.
