Why am I told I do not have permission to see the contents of my cache folder

When I go to Finder Go to Folder and want to see the contents of my db.cache folder, I am told I don't have permission. It is MY computer and only I have access to it (I hope!).

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I am running 10.6. I have an old MacBook Pro (6 years old) and I am trying to speed up Safari. I read somewhere that I should find my cache folder in Finder and empty it. However, I find that Google Chrome runs much better than Safari, so I may start using that instead. I don't like the idea of "not having permission" to open a folder on my computer. The nerve!

There is more than one cache folder, and I don't know which one you're trying to empty. You should be able to empty the Safari cache by selecting Reset Safari from the Safari menu in the menu bar, if I remember right. However, Safari in your OS version is years out of date, and you'd probably be better off using another browser anyway, until you decide to upgrade to a more recent version of OS X.

I Think I will just use Google Chrome browser from now on. It's too bad that Apple makes is use a different browser or buy a new computer. They should updat Safari even on old macbooks. Not all of us can afford to buy a new laptop every few years just because Safari is out of date.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance. I appreciate it.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher

Your Mac needs:

  • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
  • 8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Do a backup before installing.
