Mail won't quit or allow shutdown

I have MacBook Pro, ver. 10.9.5, opened Mail as usual but only see "Mail" in task bar at the top of the screen, no mail window. Can't find any setting to fix it. My mail host is Verizon.Won't allow restart or shutdown. Help?

1. Force Quit .

Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time. Wait.

When Force Quit window appears, select Mail if not already.

Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window. Wait.

Mail will quit.

2. If this does not help, press and hold the power button for 7 seconds or more.

Computer will shut down.
